Shape decides the model, cut decides whether it is beautiful, and carat is the one most people over-weight. The order to decide these things in.

Choosing a centre stone: what matters, and what does not

The four Cs are a grading language. They were invented so that two people in different cities could describe the same stone and mean the same thing, and they do that job well. What they are not is a shopping order — treating them as a checklist to maximise, one at a time, is how somebody ends up paying for a grade nobody can see and skimping on the one thing everybody can. Here is what actually changes how a stone looks on a hand, roughly in the order worth deciding it.

Shape, first — because it decides the model

Every other choice can be revisited. Shape mostly cannot, because the head is built around the girdle of the stone that is going in it. A model made for a round and a model made for a pear are different pieces, not the same piece with a different stone dropped in — different prong positions, a different basket, sometimes a different shank. Changing your mind after CAD is a new model rather than an edit.

That is also why a catalogue design is offered per shape rather than as one design you pick a stone for. Thirteen shapes is thirteen models, and the metal weight is not even the same between them.

We set the ten shapes people actually ask for — round, oval, cushion, princess, emerald, pear, marquise, radiant, Asscher and heart — and anything else on request. Which brings us to the part shape does that nobody mentions.

Carat is weight, not size

A carat is a fifth of a gram. It says how much stone there is, not how much of it you see, and those come apart badly. An elongated shape spreads its weight across the face; a deep one hides it underneath. Two stones of identical weight can differ noticeably in how large they read looking down at a hand, which is the only angle anybody ever judges a ring from.

Ovals, marquises and pears buy visible size for the same money. Round brilliants and cushions carry more of their weight in depth. If size on the finger is the goal, the shape does more for it than the next tenth of a carat.

Prices step at round numbers rather than sliding — the jump either side of a full carat is real, and it is paid for a difference nobody can see. A stone just under a boundary is the single most reliable saving in this whole subject.

Cut is the one that decides whether it is beautiful

Of the four, cut is the one you can see across a room and the one people rank last. It is not the shape — it is how well the stone was proportioned and finished for that shape: whether light entering the top comes back out of the top, or leaks through the bottom while you are looking at it. A poorly cut stone of excellent colour and clarity looks like glass. A well cut stone two grades down in both looks alive.

Only round brilliants are graded for cut in the usual sense. For everything else the grade is not offered, which is exactly when it matters most and exactly when you have to look rather than read.

Colour, and where the metal hides it

Colour is graded in the absence of it, and the top grades are separated by differences a jeweller needs a master set and a controlled light to call. On a finished ring the metal does half the work: a faintly warm stone that would show against white gold disappears completely against yellow, because it is being seen next to something warmer than it is.

So the practical rule is not "buy the highest grade" but "match the grade to the setting". We ask for it in three bands — colourless, near-colourless, and the warmer near-colourless range — because that is the resolution at which the decision is actually made. Buying above the band your metal will reveal is buying a certificate.

Colour also becomes more visible as stones get larger, and in step cuts, which have fewer facets to break the light up. A shade that vanishes in a one-carat round can be plain in a two-carat emerald cut.

Clarity: eye-clean is the threshold

Clarity grades describe what a trained person sees under ten times magnification. Nobody wears a ring under magnification. The threshold that matters is whether an inclusion is visible to an ordinary eye at ordinary distance, and that threshold sits far below the top of the scale for most stones.

Cut style moves it. Brilliant cuts — round, oval, pear, marquise, cushion — scatter light and hide a great deal. Step cuts — emerald, Asscher — are open windows into the stone, and an inclusion that would disappear in a brilliant sits there in plain view. If you want a step cut, spend on clarity. If you want a brilliant, spend it on cut instead.

Lab or natural

A lab-grown diamond is a diamond: the same material, the same hardness, graded on the same scale by the same labs. The differences that are real are price, which is not close, and resale, which for both is worse than people expect but for lab stones is worse still. Nothing about the setting changes — we set either, and a bench cannot tell them apart without the inscription.

The gap moves, and it has moved a long way in a few years, so anybody quoting you a ratio is quoting a moment. What is stable is the trade-off it buys: the same budget gets a noticeably larger or better-cut lab stone, or a smaller natural one with a resale story. Which of those matters is not a question a guide can answer for you.

We also set moissanite, sapphire, ruby, emerald, tanzanite, aquamarine and morganite, and a coloured centre changes the calculus completely — in a sapphire, colour is the whole grade and clarity expectations are different.

What the shape does to the setting

  • Pointed shapes — pear, marquise, heart — need a V-prong over the point. The tip is the thinnest part of the stone and the part that chips.
  • Emerald and Asscher cuts have cut corners, and those corners want covering rather than exposing.
  • Elongated brilliants can show a bow-tie: a dark band across the middle caused by the cut, not the setting. It is worth looking for before choosing the stone, because nothing about the mount will fix it.
  • A bezel protects everything and shows less of the stone. On an active hand that is a trade worth making, and it is the one setting that survives a life without being checked.

How we price a stone

With you, by hand. There is no stone table on our pricing page and no automatic figure, because a stone is not a specification — it is a specific stone, and two with the same four grades on paper can be worth meaningfully different amounts. An order that names a stone goes to a person for exactly that reason, and the metal, casting and finishing around it are priced separately and arithmetically.

You are also free to supply your own. Plenty of clients do, and the model is then built to that stone’s actual measurements rather than to a nominal size, which is better anyway.

The order worth deciding in

  • Shape — it fixes the model, so decide it before anything is drawn.
  • Budget, honestly, before grades. Every remaining choice is a trade against it.
  • Cut, spending first here for brilliants. It is what makes the stone look like a stone.
  • Clarity to eye-clean, and further only for step cuts.
  • Colour matched to the metal, not to the top of the scale.
  • Carat last, filling what the budget has left — and sitting just under a round number rather than just over it.
